Notes from the Commodore
Wow! What a great oyster roast! We had oysters by the bussel, dogs in the flag room, music in the bar and billiards in the pool room. It was a great time with many people staying till late in the evening. And that was right after the Superbowl party. There is a new TV in the pool room which was good Superbowl night because the club was full of fans and friends. Thank you Hamilton Foster for your donation of 2 TV’s for our enjoyment. The club has a great feel to it these days. Gary and Cyndie along with the rest of the entertainment committee are producing some good memories. But none of it would be as good if you didn’t show up to enjoy it. A special thanks to Walter Spalviero, husband of member Erin Spalviero, who repaired the awning after is was damaged in high winds.
The SAYRA meeting was good and informative as usual. We shared a hospitality suite with CORA. Hobcaw, James Island, Carolina and the Maritime Foundation all shared in some expenses also. It was a nice time with evidence that our racing heritage is firmly in place. There were many clubs represented sharing knowledge and planning actions to encourage racing in the southeast. There are statistics showing that interest in sailing is dropping significantly. It is our job to shepard others in what water sports mean. They mean more of a
relationship with each other as well as the sport. Let’s redouble efforts to encourage and introduce new blood to the water.
Race Week and Gulf Steamer are around the corner. ChYC is always seen as the club to ask for volunteers to help with Race Week. If you are interested please volunteer. It is going to be big again this year. The Gulf Streamer is just getting firmed up. There are a few sailors looking for crew still. That is always a great event for distance racing.
We continue to work on our difficult issues of water access and budget. Keith Gannett has formed an active long range planning committee. Thank you for your trust in the board to address these issues. Thank you also for your help and advice in these matters. We have a lot of smart and talented people in this club who are
always willing to help. All of us working together will assure we remain a vibrant refuge in these hard economic times. Thank you for your warmth and good cheer – especially your warmth this year.
I look forward to seeing you at the club.
